President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed not to spare anyone found guilty of corrupt practices.
Speaking on Tuesday, September 1, at the opening session of the 45th Annual Accountants Conference and 50th Anniversary celebration of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Buhari said he would step up his anti-corruption war in the country, The Punch reports.
In his address, delivered by the permanent secretary of the Federal Ministry of Finance, Mrs Anastasia Nwaobia, the president called on ICAN to assist his administration in reversing the trend of lack of prudence, transparency and honesty in the management of public resources.
He urged them to ensure that government resources are duly accounted for with all sense of transparency.
The president said: “We are at the threshold of history where we must collectively take the destiny of the nation in our hands.
“As Nigerians, no one can love Nigeria like you and me. On our part, we will continue to lead by example, making efforts to live above board.
“As we strive to walk our talk, we will carry our initiative to overhaul the bureaucracy in the public sector to logical conclusions in an effort to engender transparency and improve productivity in public governance.”
President Buhari promised to energize all anti-corruption agencies in the country such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission so that the processes of accountability in public governance will be reinforced.
According to Buhari, Nigerian citizens have no business being classified as poor, due to the fact that the nation had enough resources at its disposal.
He said Nigerians are suffering in the midst of plenty as a result of the greed of some unpatriotic few, who have mismanaged the public resources of the country.
Last week, Buhari had warned federal civil servants to either desist from corrupt practices or be ready to quit the service.
