House of Representatives member-elect, Sidi Yakubu Karasuwa speaking on behalf of his colleagues said their decision to support the four-time returnee lawmaker stems from the fact that he has shown quality pedigree, and consistency in character.
The lawmakers also said they supported Gbajabiamila because his experience and as a result of favourable zoning.
Sidi Yakubu told Daily Trust, “Gbajabiamila is the best material for the job being from the South-west and considering his legislative experience, he was a deputy minority leader and became a minority leader in 2011.
The lawmaker-elect also said Gbajabiamila was supported because he “is tested and trusted by most of his colleagues in the house and this records have given us lot of hope.”
Sidi urged the National Assembly members-elect to support Gbajabiamila’s hopes of being named speaker as the All Progressives Congress (APC) seeks a stable government after usurping the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after 16 years as the opposition.
Sidi Yakubu reasoned that since the North-west has the president and the North-east is expected to take the Senate presidency, it would be be logical if the South-west which has the vice president also produce the speaker of the House.
He said, “Since the South-south and South-east have shut themselves out in a way, it now became necessary for the South-west to take up the exalted seat of the speaker.”
Gbajabiamila himself has been soliciting for support as he bids to be named speaker. Few weeks ago, the minority leader of the House of Representatives, wrote an official letter to his colleagues soliciting for their support in his quest to emerge as their leader.
If Gbajabiamila wins, he will be replacing Sokoto state governor-elect, Aminu Tambuwal as speaker.
