The joint task force operatives arrested two pipeline vandals responsible for damaging a 16-inch pipeline operated by Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) at Irene in Delta on July 23.
Isa Ado, the spokesman of the Joint task force, disclosed some interesting details the suspects have told during their preliminary interrogation.
He said that the vandals were sent to do their dirty job by a prospective surveillance contractor to make NPDC secure a deal with the said contractor.
The spokesman told the press that “the suspects confessed that they were sent by a contractor from Orogun community to carry out the act in order to secure contract job for its repairs from NPDC. The act, according to them, will force NPDC to give out the surveillance contract to one Moris Idiovwa. The suspects further confessed that they hatched the plan with others, now at large, at a hotel in Ugheli and perfected plans to embark on destruction and cutting of oil pipelines.’’
A month ago the federal government of Nigeria has finally terminated the pipeline surveillance and protection contract awarded to many independent ethnic security groups by ex President Goodluck Jonathan.
The federal government has moved armed military personnel to take over the security of the facilities from the operatives.
Oodua Peoples Congress has alleged two days ago that the recent increase in pipeline vandalism and explosions in the country could be traced to the cancellation of their controversial oil pipeline surveillance contracts.
