FG Moves To Ensure Affordable Housing, Prevent Housing Crisis

A twelve-man ministerial committee has been inaugurated by the federal government to look into the issue of affordable housing in Nigeria.
The government is “concerned” about the large gap the affordability of housing, a statement, issued on weekend in Abuja and signed by Adedeji Ajibade, public affairs director of the Federal Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, reads.
Speaking on behalf of the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, George Ossi, Ajibade said the delivery of adequate and affordable housing in Nigeria as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution is yet to meet the desired expectations. The delay has resulted in inadequate stock: in order to reduce the deficit and avert a housing crisis by 2020, a minimum of one million housing units is still being expected to be finished every year.
According to the statement, approximately 600,000 housing units are currently being developed annually through the public private partnership arrangement, with another 240,000 low-cost housing units under a prototype housing scheme and projects of new towns and cities.
