The children of police officers killed while fighting the Boko Haram insurgency in the north east region will receive scholarships, the inspector general of police, Solomon Arase, has said.
Arase made this known yesterday at the state police headquarters in Bauchi during a one day working visit to the command.
Daily Independent quotes him saying: “The children of our gallant officers who died while on duty as a result of insurgency will be offered scholarship.”
Arase said he will prioritize the welfare of police officers.
“I am passionate about your welfare because you are the front-line soldiers of the nation. Your welfare should be paramount and as such, you should be treated nicely”.
Arase also said he will pay fees and other expenses for the 36,000 officers attending promotion training courses. Addressing allegations of corruption in the police, he said that police officers become corrupt because of fear of the unknown.
He said: “Corruption is born out of the fear of the unknown. When you are not sure of the future, the tendency to be corrupt is very high, so after retiring from the force, you will be given a befitting accommodation.”
Arase had earlier warned that personal policemen who carry boxes and do other chores for VIPs they are assigned to protect would be arrested immediately
