Student Union Government of the Lagos State University has commended the new academic calendar approved by the institution’s authorities.
Fatai Adebanjo, the spokesperson for the SUG, said the new calendar was put together after Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s intervention and direction to fix new dates for examinations.
“Following our protest on July 9, the governor instructed the university senate to ratify our new examination date,” Mr Adebanjo said in an interview with NAN.“The senate sat on Friday and the university updated its portal, indicating that we would start our examinations on July 22 and we all are happy with that development.”
On July 10, the senate at its emergency approved holding the harmattan semester examination within the period from July 22 to August 4.
On Saturday, the university issued a circular saying grading, uploading of department and faculty consideration and uploading of corrections would hold from August 5 to August 25. The senate would meet to consider results on August 25, and the semester would end the same day.
“The institution will resume for the rain (second) semester on Aug. 31 for online registration and lectures immediately,” the circular read. “Lectures will hold from Aug. 31 to Nov. 13, while revision will take place from Nov. 16 to Nov. 20. Second semester examination will start from Nov. 23 to Dec. 4. Grading, uploading of department and faculty consideration and uploading of corrections will hold between Dec. 7 and Dec. 28, while the senate will meet to consider results on Dec. 29. The session would end on Dec. 29.”
On July 6, LASU SUG issued a 48-hour ultimatum for the state government, following the seven-month-long conflict between the management of the institution and the staff unions, as well as the sudden postponement of the second semester examinations. After the time limit’s expiration, the aggrieved students staged a peaceful protest blocking vehicular movement along the Badagry and Iba expressways.
