Police officers attached to the Owutu police station have been accused of releasing a principal suspect in the torture of Opeyemi Amuda.
The suspect was identified as Ifafunke Eritosin, the mother-in-law of the victim. Eritosin allegedly led other members of her family to assault Opeyemi in her house at number 9 Aminu Toyin Street, Igbo-Olomu Owutu, Ikorodu.
According to residents, Eritosin, a prophetess with a white garment church, and her children identified as Ajisafe Solomon and Ajayi Ayomide, a woman, allegedly beat Opeyemi with a stick and inserted a Turbo beer bottle into her vagina, over allegations that she was seeing another man and was disrespectful to Eritosin when she was confronted over the allegation.
Opeyemi was mentally affected following the torture and she is currently receiving treatment at a rehabilitation centre in Ikorodu, after a non governmental organisation, Women Arise for Change Initiative, reported the assault to the police at the Owutu police station.
While the police have since charged Ajisafe Solomon and Ajayi Ayomide to court on a three-count charge of assault and grievous bodily harm, residents, however, said the police have freed Eritosin, who allegedly masterminded the torture.
Deacon Adebayo Obatungashe, the coordinator of Women Arise For Change Iniative at Ikorodu, expressed sadness over the assault, calling on the police to arrest and charge all the suspects involved in the crime.
He said: “Our organisation learnt of the assault and we have been following up to ensure that everybody involved is arrested and charged accordingly.
“It is very disheartening that people will go to the extent of inflicting pains on a fellow human being by flogging her with stick until she ran mad. They were not satisfied with this evil and they also inserted bottle into her private part.
“This is totally unacceptable and we are sad over the way and manner the woman was treated; I saw her (Opeyemi) and she is mentally ill as a result of the severe beating she received. She is defecating and urinating on herself and she cannot recognise anybody as she has lost her mind.
“While we appreciate the police for their prompt response in arresting two of the suspects, we are irked that the principal suspect, Mrs. Eritosin is walking free. She is not only walking free but she is using the police to arrest other residents of the community who reported her.
“We are calling on the police authority to re-arrest this woman and make her face the full wrath of the law. Women Arise For Change Initiative will continue to follow up on the matter until justice is served to everybody involved”.It is understood that the Lagos State Office of the Public Defender have taken over the case.
Efforts to get the reaction of the Lagos state police spokeperson, Kenneth Nwosu, were not successful as he was said to be away on an official assignment.
