'Soldiers Can't Guarantee Safety For President Buhari'

Adebayo Adeoye, a retired deputy inspector-general of police, has lamented the poor handling of president Muhammadu Buhari’s safety by soldiers and has called on the restoration of operatives of Department of State Services (DSS) to manage the protection of the president.

President Buhari had on Friday narrowly escaped a mob at the prayer ground during the Eid celebration and had to quickly get into his car for safety. The former police said the president was vulnerable to attack and this was inadvertently caused by soldiers protecting the president instead of the DSS personnel.

The Punch reports that the president had said a person with a knife could have taken advantage of the uncontrolled crowd to attack him.
Adeoye said the incidence at the prayer ground showed that the number one citizen of the federation was being protected by military men who were not trained in the act of crowd control. He noted that the lack of skills and experience of the soldiers in the situation could endanger the life of the president.
He suggested that DSS operatives who are highly trained in protecting the president and have the necessary experience should be restored and saddled with that responsibility.

He said: ‘The DSS operatives should be allowed to protect the president; soldiers are not trained on crowd control or close protection.”
Meanwhile, President Buhari has landed in the US capital ahead of the planned meeting with American president, Barack Obama.
