President of the Nigeria Football Federation Amàju Pinnick has revealed why Sunday Oliseh was chosen as the next coach of the super Eagles following the sacking of Stephen Keshi.
Oliseh will be officially announced as Super Eagles coach this week and Pinnick says he was selected because of his high intellectual capacity in coaching and recommendations by FIFA.
The NFF boss was speaking at the Warri City stadium during yesterday’s league match between Warri Wolves and Enyimba.
Oliseh has a UEFA Pro Licence certificate which is seen as the highest coaching certificate in the world but cbut the former midfielder has no experience managing a top team in Europe, Africa, America or even a junior national side.
Pinnick has however defended Oliseh while speaking with a reporter of the Vanguard. He says Oliseh was picked for his passion, his intellectual capacity and FIFA recommendation.
He said: “I absolutely feel that we have made the right choice by picking Oliseh to handle the Super Eagles. In this age of technological advancement, we must start doing things differently. We need a coach with sound intellectual capacity and one who has the highest coaching certificate.
“He is working with FIFA at the technical study group. The world recognises him and FIFA even recommended him. He has the passion to coach the Eagles and that is also important for us.
“On his lack of experience, Nigerians must realise that he’s not the first to be first named in the world. Berti Vogts and Juergen Klinsmann didn’t have experience when they were appointed, so why the noise about Oliseh”, asked Pinnick rhetorically
Oliseh played as a defensive midfielder for such clubs as Ajax, Borussia Dortmund, Genk and Juventus. He played 54 times for Nigeria scoring two goals.
Meanwhile, friends and former footballers have warned Sunday Oliseh to think twice before accepting to head coach of the national team.
The warning to Oliseh was said to be necessary following the way the NFF has conducted itself in the past.
Also Clemens Westerhof, a former Super Eagles technical adviser, is not sure about the abilities of the new coach of the national team, Sunday Oliseh, to lead the team.
