78 Year-Old Man In Court For Defiling 11-Year-Old Girl

A 78 year-old man, identified as Adebowale Dauda, was on Wednesday, August 12, brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defiling an 11-year-old girl.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the accused is facing a three-count charge of defilement, sexual assault and breach of peace.
Sgt. Jimah Iseghede, the prosecutor, told the court that the offences were committed on Tuesday, August 4, at 29, Anipupo street, Pen Cinema, Agege, a suburb of Lagos state.
According to him, the accused called the victim to a lotto shop under the pretence of sending her on an errand.
He said: “The shop owner does not stay there; so it is only the accused that goes there every day and because of this, it was easy for him to carry out the act. The accused had assaulted the child eight times and told her that she would die if she tells anyone.” 
Iseghede told the court that the 11-year-old reported the matter to her elder sister when the pain became unbearable, the sister in-turn later told their mother.
The offences, contravenes Sections 137, 166 (d) and 259 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. The same section prescribes life imprisonment for the offence. The accused has however denied the charges.
Tajudeen Elias, the Chief Magistrate, in his ruling granted the accused a bail of N1 million with two sureties in like sum. The case has been adjourned to September 2.
Meanwhile, the Lagos state government has repeated its commitment in ensuring the total eradication of sexual and gender-based violence in the state.
