The first leg of the 2015/2016 Champions League playoffs has been concluded with Lazio, Manchester United, Sporting, BATE Borisov and FC Astana recording slender wins over Bayern Leverkusen, Clube Brugge, CSKA Moscow, Partizan and APEOL respectively.
FC Astana 1 – 0 APOEL Nicosia: In the first math played, Astana of Kazakhstan take a one goal lead into the second leg against APEOL of Cyprus. Baurzhan Dzholchiyev scored foe the home side in the 14th mintue.
BATE Borisov 1 – 0 Partizan Beograd: BATE of Belarus over came Partizan of Serbia 1-0. Just four minutes in, Mikhail Gordejchuk latched on to an accurate pass inside the box for the hosts and fired a low shot towards the right post that Zivko Zivkovic smartly palmed away.
Lazio 1 – 0 Bayer Leverkusen: In one of the most interesting playoff times in recent times, Lazio had substitute, Balde Diao Keita to thank for scoring in the 77th minute against Bayern Leverkusen of Germany.
Manchester United 3 – 1 Club Brugge: In the biggest tie of the night, Memphis Depay produced a man of the match performance to thwart Brugge 3-1 at old Trafford.
The Belgian club were surprisingly in the lead in the eight minute as Michael Carrick diverted a freekick from Victor Vazquez’sinto his own net in a manner that would make Wayne Rooney proud if he did so at the other end.
Moments later, Memphis equalized with his first goal for the English club following some nice footwork on the left. Just before the half-time break, Memphis added his second, cutting in from the left and curling a fine effort past Sebastien Bruzzese.
Marouane Fellaini nodded in a third in injury time to ensure the red devils head to Belgium next week with a two-goal lead.
Sporting CP 1 – 0 CSKA Moscow: Islam Slimani struck eight minutes from time as Sporting were rewarded for a dominant display in Lisbon against CSKA with a late victory. Teofilo Guiterrez gave the home side the lead in the 12th minute but loanee, Seydou Doumbia equalized in the 40th minute.
The return leg of these set of matches will be played on August 26. Winners of the ties will qualify for the group stages of the 2015/2016 champions league.
The second set of playoff matches will however be played tomorrow Wednesday, August 19th. The fixtures include:
