Ekiti Residents Accuse Fayose Of Locking Them Out

The Ekiti state Housing Corporation last week sealed-off gates of over a hundred houses under the Government Housing Scheme, Irewolede-Ilawe road, Ado Ekiti.
Governor Fayose of Ekiti state
It was gathered that the debtors who were mostly civil servants and politicians bought each of the houses between 3 and 3.5 million naira with a mortgage agreement that the money would be paid on installments.
The buyers who took the possession of the houses starting from the year 2008 was said to have refused to continue the payment over the years, making the debts to accumulate to about 800 million naira.
After several notices with ultimatum given by the authority of the housing corporation to the affected people to balance-up, only few were set to have responded with payment of 13 million naira.
The refusal of most debtors according to the director, Land Services, Mr Jide Ogundoro, led to the enforcement.
Several house owners at the estate absconded in the early hours of Thursday on hearing that officials of the housing corporation would be visiting the housing units for physical confrontation.
The affected houses were sealed off, while officers from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Nigeria Police were placed the entry of the Housing Estate with the directive not to allow any debtor access.
In a swift, owners rushed to the palaces of Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adeyemo Adejugbe and other prominent monarchs in the state for help.
The matter was tentatively resolved as the traditional rulers pleaded with the governor to give the people additional time to balance up.
Fayose who accepted the plea, extended the deadline for the defaulters till November 30, 2015.
