Policemen attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Lagos state police command have arrested twelve traffic armed robbery suspects who allegedly specialise in robbing passengers inside traffic gridlock.
The RRS commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Olatunji Disu, who confirmed the arrest said the suspects belong to a syndicate operating at Mile-II and Ijora areas of the state.
He said: “Following the incessant complaints from members of the public on regular in-traffic robbery along these axis, the state commissioner of police, CP Fatai Owoseni, ordered that immediate and drastic actions must be taken to arrest the situation which has started yielding positive results.
“Operatives from the RRS responded to the tip-off from the motorists plying the roads and between the hours of 22:00 and 23: 00 on August 21st, 2015 we apprehended the suspects.
“The operatives also recovered wraps of Indian-hemp from the suspects; police investigation revealed that the social miscreants are in the habit of robbing, snatching handsets and dispossessing law abiding citizens of their valuables during the traffic-jam along Mile 2 and Ijora respectively.”
Narrating the modus-operandi of the armed robbery suspects, ACP Disu said: “The suspects attack their victims by breaking the vehicles’ windscreens during traffic hours.
“By so doing, their victims will be left with no option than to surrender their belongings to them under duress. The suspects were taken to our office and four of them who gave satisfactory account of themselves were released. The remaining eight have been charged to court immediately.”
ACP Disu appealed to members of the public to cooperate with the police to reduce crime and its related offences in the metropolis.
