How Two 'Spirits' Landed In Jail

Two young men, Auwalu Haruna and Kabiru Lawal, posing as ‘spirits’ have been jailed by an Upper Shari’ah court, Fagge – Kano, for fraud.
Haruna was found guilty of threatening to harm his girlfriend, Maryam Mustapha, if she refused to to marry him.
A typical Shar’ia court
Trouble started between the lovers when Auwalu realized his girlfriend had left him for another man. Sensing she may never marry him, he resorted to all forms of tricks in order to seduce and have sex with her which she also refused.
Observing he had failed in his mission, he solicited the help of his friend Kabiru who persistently called her GSM number and told her that he was a ‘spirit’ and if she did not agree with their demands something terrible would happen to her.
The ‘spirit’ ordered Maryam and her parents to pay him the sum of #200,000 on an appointed date.
Having been bothered by their daily threats and the incessant phone calls, Maryam informed her father Alhaji Mustapha Jamilu, who notified the police and the ‘spirits’ were swiftly apprehended.
In court the men pleaded guilty but appealed for leniency from the court. They were sentenced to one year in jail with six lashes.
