Imo Speaker Dismisses Impeachment Rumour

The speaker of the Imo state House of Assembly, Acho Ihim, has dismissed rumours making the rounds that members of the Assembly were planning to impeach him and other principal officers.
He said there was no such move by anyone adding that the rumours  are being spread by some people in the state  just to create tension in the state.
Rumours of the alleged planned impeachment of the speaker and his principal officers became rife two weeks ago following the reported inability of the speaker to get the state governor, Rochas Okorocha to pay the House members their entitlements, The Union reports.
Eighteen of the 27 members of the House were said to have been boycotting plenary to drive home their point. Some of the aggrieved lawmakers were said to be accusing the speaker and the governor of starving them of funds while others with pending cases at the election petition tribunal complained  of the inability to pay their lawyers for their defence.
The lawmakers were said to be holding a series of meetings with the aim of removing the speaker.
Reacting to the alleged plan to impeach him, the speaker told newsmen over the weekend that the rumour was just speculation meant to destabilise the Assembly. He added that members of the Assembly are united as one family and  could not have been involved in any impeachment move.
He admitted that members might not have received 100% of their entitlements saying that the governor will make efforts not to starve them of funds despite the current economic situation in the country.
Meanwhile, Governor Okorocha has warned striking civil servants who have shutdown government offices across the state to return work or be sacked.
The workers are on strike over several months of unpaid salaries.
