Barcelona attacking duo, Lionel Messi and Luiz Suárez with Real Madrid’s Christiano Ronaldo have been shortlisted for the 2014/2015 European footballer of the year by The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).
The players have been very outstanding from start to finish of the 2014/2015 season.
1. Lionel Messi (Argentina – Barcelona)
In La Liga, the Argentine broke Telmo Zarra’s record of 251 goals with a hat-trick against Sevilla on November 22. The striker finished Barcelona’s treble-winning term with 58 strikes in all competitions, which includes a double in the Copa del Rey final.
Messi also ended the UEFA Champions League campaign as the ten-goal joint-top scorer along-side Madrid hit-man, Ronaldo and club-mate Neymar.
The four time Ballon d’or recipient is also level on 77 UEFA Champions League goals with arch-rival Ronaldo.
2. Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal – Real Madrid)
Netted 48 times in the Spanish La Liga and the joint-top UEFA Champions League scorer.
Ronaldo’s master-class saw him find the net 61 times in all competitions for Madrid last season which was a career-best from. He is now ahead of Di Stéfano on the club’s all-time list.
‘CR7′ incredibly hit five past Granada in Madrid’s 9-1 win over Granada in April. He finished the campaign with three successive hat-tricks – against Espanyol, Getafe and Armenia.
3. Luis Suárez (Uruguay – Barcelona)
Scored in the final of the UEFA Champions League. Also netted in the round of 16 first leg against Manchester City.
The Uruguayan completed a devastating three-deadly strike force with Neymar and Messi which yielded a whopping 122 goals in all competitions.
The winner will be announced on August 27, 2015.
