Oba Sijuwade To Be Buried On Friday

One of Nigeria’s prominent ruler, the late Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade will be laid to rest on Friday, August 14, in Ile-Ife, according to his son, Prince Adetokunboh Sijuwade.
Oba Sijuwade died on Tuesday, July 28, in a private hospital in London after a brief illness at the age of 85.
His son, Prince Adetokunboh Sijuwade, made the announcement at a joint press conference with the Osun state governor, Rauf Aregbesola and a palace chief.
He said his father’s body will be flown from the UK on Thursday, August 13, and will be buried on Friday, August 14 at 10 am.
Also speaking, Governor Rauf Aregbesola said the “late Ooni represented the Yoruba nation and has done a lot in uplifting the traditional institution in the state”.
The governor described the death of the Ooni as a great loss to the state and the Yoruba race. He however noted that a king could not die in Yoruba land.
The press briefing was also attended by the Ooni’s daughter, Aderounmu Fadeyi, Oba Solomon Omisakin, the Obalufe of Iromo, High Chief Joseph Ijaodola, the Lowa of Ile-Ife, Vice Chairman of the Ife Traditional Council and members of Ife Traditional Council.
There was confusion over the demise of the monarch, when palace sources insisted that paramount ruler was alive and in good state of health.
There were reports that, the Nigerian High Commission in the UK said that one member of staff from the mission would be accompanying the body of the monarch back to Nigeria when his remains arrive.
Meanwhile report has it that the rites of passage preceding the public pronouncement of the death and burial of the monarch may have reached its final stage.
