A young man identified as Bidemi Akinde has lost his life as a result of the violence which started due to a land tussle in Ogun State.
Our correspondent learnt that the fracas over the ownership of the land at Atan Otta, was allegedly triggered over claims by an estate agent and hotelier, one Mutairu Owoeye, that he had gotten a court judgment affirming that the said parcel of land belongs to him.
Eyewitness stated that Mr Owoeye came with policemen to enforce the court judgment.
He was also said to have brought labourers to clear the land following the court judgment but trouble started when armed young men stormed the site and attacked the workers.
Mr. Adeyemi said: “Mr. Owoeye brought men to work on the land after he had pasted the court judgment around the community.
“The police were on ground to ensure the villagers do not take law into their hands to attack the workers, but as soon as the police left, the villagers who were not happy over the loss of the land through the court judgment ambushed the workers with dangerous weapons with which a stray bullet hit 18-year-old barbing apprentice Abidemi Akinjide and he died on the spot. His corpse was used to barricade the road.
“The deceased’s brother, an army captain, led some soldiers from Owode barracks to the scene of the incident to recover the corpse of the victim used to block the road by protesters.”
Speaking further another eyewitness who requested anonymity said: “The soldiers arrested Mr. Owoeye from his hotel and handed him over to the police while the protesters vandalised his property.”
Our correspondent learnt that Mr. Owoeye is being detained at the Zone 2 police command, Onikan-Lagos.
