Pirates Kidnap Local Chiefs In Bayelsa

Pirates operating in the seemingly volatile Bayelsa waters, yesterday afternoon waylaid two speedboats and abducted three individuals along the Ogbia-Brass waterways in the state.
Confirming the incident to Premium Times, the Bayelsa state police command public relations officer, Asinim Butswat, said he is aware, but added that he was yet to get details.
But a security source said two chiefs in one of the communities around were abducted, and gave their names as Blessing Wagio and Isaac Akono-Igolo.
The victims’ boats  reportedly left the Ogbia water front at about 2pm for Brass when they were attacked around Kiberibio area of the Ogbia-Brass waterway, an area that is a hotbed for notorious sea pirates attacks.
Some lucky persons escaped the pirates, among them a supervisor with the state ministry of education heading to Brass for today’s first school leaving certificate examination, a naval officer and a former chief librarian in the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Jigekuma Ombu-Kieri, were said to have escaped unhurt.
A witness in one of the boats, Kilete Arum, said she saw an unidentified man lying face down in the pirates’ speedboat when they were being dispossessed of their valuables.
Just last week, the Joint Task Force operating with the code name “Operation Pulo Shield” has arrested an alleged notorious kidnapper terrorising the Niger Delta region.
A week earlier, the JTF in the Niger Delta conducted a successful operation. The troops arrested six suspected pirates who had earlier launched an attack that killed four soldiers and a policeman in Nembe, Bayelsa state.
