Police Arraign NURTW Leaders Over Murder

A unit chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Lateef Akinpelu, and a suspected gang leader, one Muritala Aweniyi, have been arraigned before an Igbosere magistrate court over allegation of serial murder of some members of the union and other residents of Mushin, Surulere and Ebute-Metta area of Lagos state.
The accused were arrested by a team of policemen from the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS), Adeniji Adele central police station Lagos, led by Inspector Banjoko Oluwemimo.
Aweniya who is facing an eight count charge was arrested by the police  following the brutal murder of the NURTW unit chairman, one Olayemi Mathew Eniola popularly known as Esi-Oluwo at Oshodi area of the state in April.
Aweniya who claimed to have dropped out from studying Banking and Finance at the polytechnic Ibadan is also being accused of leading a gang that allegedly killed a 16 -year- old boy identified as Oluwaseun Babalola and the shooting of the deceased’s mother one Mary Babalola at Owosheni Isola street, Ilasamaja-Lagos.
Count 1 reads: “That you Muritala Aweniya aka Horsepain on or about the 10th day of February, 2015 at Owosheni Isola Street, Ilasmaja in the Lagos Magisterial  district, conspired with others now at large to commit felony to wit: Murder and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 231 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.”
Count II: “That you Muritala Aweniya and others now at large on the same date and place in the aforesaid magisterial district unlawfully killed one Oluwaseun Babalola by shooting him with gun and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 221 of the criminal laws of Lagos 2011.”
Count V stated: “That you Muritala Aweniya and others now at large on did manage or assist in the management of an unlawful society by the name ‘buccaneers confraternity’ and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 41 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.”
Count VIII reads: “That you Muritala Aweniya and others now at large on the same date and place in the aforesaid magisterial district unlawfully killed one Olayemi Mathew Eniola by using hammer to kill him and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 221 of the criminal law of Lagos State”.
According to police investigation, the gang allegedly killed Eniola during a rally at Oshodi by using an hammer to hit him severely on his head and left him in the pool of his blood.

Akinpelu who is facing a two count charge bordering on Murder was  accused of leading a gang to kill one Olusupo Abass a commercial motorcycle rider and an NURTW member on February 21st at Agoro street Mushin Lagos.
Police records revealed that the criminal was arrested and charged to court in 2012 for the alleged killing of one Wasiu Ajose at Mushin but he was released after spending four months in prison; his lawyer got a motion bail and has since not returned to court over that case.
