After over four hours of screening, the senate on Tuesday confirmed the new service chiefs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The newly appointed service chiefs include Major General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin as Chief of Defence Staff‎ and Major General Tukur Yusufu Buratai as Chief of Army Staff.
Others include Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas for Chief of Naval Staff and Air Vice Marshall Sadique Baba Abubakar as Chief of Air Staff.
The senate president, Bukola Saraki congratulated the newly appointed chiefs saying that the appointment came at a time when insurgency had reached its peak.
“Its clear that their appointment is based on merit and their presence before us today.
“The appointment as we all see, it is coming at a very crucial time with a lot of challenges particularly insurgency in North east and some of the other security issues, for example, the issue of oil theft when they came before us.
“We hope that during the period of time, their performance will take off the responsibility required”, he said.
Mr Saraki went ahead to say that he believes that they will provide a new direction and leadership to the armed forces.
“We are all keen to restore the image and reputation of the armed forces.
“I believe that their confirmation is the beginning of their journey to restore the glory of the Armed Force in our great nation”, he said.
He also stressed that the Armed Forces also needs to work on the procurement proceedures in the Armed Forces and they must work hard to root out corruption.
He said that the committees set up to perform that function also have a role to play in the oversight function.
Meanwhile, Mr Saraki said that the deputy senate president, Ike Ekweremadu will be leading the delegation to Adamawa state on Wednesday.
