Suswam Allegedly Siphon N48B Meant For Local Council

Fresh allegations have been levelled against Gabriel Suswam, the former governor of Benue state.
According to a report on Daily Post, over N48 billion meant for local government funds were diverted into private accounts during the 8-year tenure of Gabriel Suswam, the Benue state government has alleged.
This was disclosed on Saturday, August 8, by Barrister Targema Takema, the secretary to the state government (SSG) at a reception organized in his honour by the Mbaiwoo Development Association in Buruku local government area of the state, Daily Post reports.
Takema said that while 29,000 local government staff were maintained by the past administration, only about 14,000 were actually present in the 23 local government areas in the state.

He alleged that Suswam’s administration robbed the state between N600-N700 million of local government funds monthly.
He said: “As a member of the transition committee, I’m aware of the fact that the indebtedness of the state as established by the committee now stands at N130 billion as against the 90 billion earlier mentioned.”
Takema however noted that arrangements have been concluded to ensure that all those who stole from the pubic treasury are made to return it to the last kobo.
Before jetting out of the country, Suswam had disclosed that his administration will be leaving a debt profile of N9.2bn behind for the Governor Samuel Ortom.
