Why School Holidays Are Bad For Spelling And Maths

A study by scientists in Graz University, Austria has revealed that school holidays are a bad idea when it comes to children’s spelling and arithmetic in the short term.
According to the study, 182 children aged 10-12 showed that after Austria’s nine weeks of summer vacation, the children showed “significant falls” in these areas.
Manuela Paechter, a psychologist and one of the authors of the study said it takes the children up to 9 weeks to recover, adding that their reading abilities improve during the holiday.
This could be because while children spend their time reading, they are less likely to be writing or solving sums.
She said: “How much time (children) spend doing cognitive activities during the vacation is therefore highly decisive. All in all the study illustrates what an enormous role school plays in this.”
The study was published in the German-language scientific journal Psychologie in Erziehung und Unterricht (Psychology in Upbringing and Education).
Meanwhile, 11 students from Muslim High School, Sagamu, were arrested last week by the officers of the National School Crime Prevention Corps (NSCPC), for an attempt to set their school ablaze.
