Ade Ipaye and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo
Last week, President Muhmmadu Buhari ratified the appointment of Rahman Adeola Ipaye as deputy chief of staff in the presidency.
Ipaye’s major brief is to work as the chief of staff to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, but because the Buhari’s administration runs ‘one presidency’ so to say, hence Ipaye’s designation as deputy chief of staff.

Although Ipaye has been working with Osinbajo since the present administration came on board, his appointment was not ratified by Buhari until last week.
Many Lagosians remember Ipaye who served as the mega city’s attorney general and commissioner of justice under former governor Tunde Fashola. But not many Nigerians know Ipaye very well.

1. 52-year old Ipaye attended the popular Igbobi college in Lagos and graduated from with B.A. (Hons) Degree (History) in 1984, LL.B. Hons (1988) and LL.M. (1991) all from the University of Lagos.
2. He started his career as a legal practitioner and research co-ordinator in the law firm of Oditah, Adebiyi & Co., Ikoyi, Lagos before joining the Faculty of Law, University of Lagos as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Commercial and Industrial Law (April 1992). He eventually rose to the position of Senior Lecturer in October 1999 and Sub Dean of Law in October 2000.
3. As a lawyer, his areas of interest includes Revenue Law, Constitutional Law, Law of Contract, Arbitration and Civil Litigation.
4. He is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators respectively.
5. His relationship with Osinbajo dates back to years as he served as the vice president’s special assistant when the latter was commissioner for justice and attorney general in Lagos state during the Bola Tinubu’s administration.
6. Ipaye and Osinbajo have also jointly written a publication in the past titled: Legal Research and Resource Development Centre Annotated Rules of the Superior Courts of Nigeria.
7. In 2012, Ipaye presided over the review of the law enacted to protect pregnant women and their babies in Lagos state, announcing to Lagosians that it was now a criminal offence in Lagos for a man to desert a woman he impregnated.
8. In 2014, Ipaye instituted a case on behalf of the Lagos state government at the Ikeja High Court compelling the court to ban hijabs in primary and secondary schools in the state. The court subsequently upheld the ban which subjected Ipaye to heavy criticisms especially from the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) which tried unsuccessfully to counter the case.
9. In March this year, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) instituted a law suit against Fashola and Ipaye, and for refusing to disclose how a loan they obtained from the World Bank for education in Lagos state was spent.
10. Ipaye is married with children and he enjoys music, reading and walking.
