A poll conducted in the week of August 24, 2015 showed how many Nigerians support President Muhammadu Buhari’s ongoing campaign against corruption.
Leadership reports that the results of the poll were released on Tuesday, September 1, and showed that 9 in 10 Nigerians (95 %) believe in the president and his ability to tackle corruption.
According to the research, 86% of those polled also want the campaign against corruption to be channelled towards the public sector, especially the oil and gas sector.
Thirty-two per cent of respondents in the category aged between 25 and 30 years think that the federal government should invest the recovered funds into job creation.
This comes as no surprise taking into consideration the high rate of youth unemployment and underemployment in the country. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the unemployment rate currently stands at 26.5% for the second quarter of 2015.
In addition, 20% of respondents think that the recovered funds should be invested in education, while 14% suggested investments in agriculture amongst other sectors of the economy.
Life imprisonment as a punitive measure for corrupt officials and individuals was suggested by 50% of the respondents surveyed. Some Nigerians (34%) believe that due process of the law should be followed in convicting corrupt individuals.
According to 11 % of respondents, steps should be taken to recover monies from corrupt individuals amongst other penalties.
Nigerians advised Buhari to consider all sectors of the economy in his bid to fight corruption. They also stressed that the president must ensure transparency in the disbursement of funds recovered from corrupt officials and individuals.
In 2014 Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index ranked Nigeria 136th out of the 174 countries it surveyed based on how corrupt their public sector was presumed to be.
Meanwhile, the Civil Liberties Organisation has stated that Buhari’s appointments only encouraged corruption in the country.
The body noted that corruption is not only stealing, but also violation of the law, and abuse of human rights, hinting that the current appointments are against the Constitution.
