President Buhari Commends Chief Obasanjo

President Muhammadu Buhari has commended President Jose Mario Vaz and the people of Guinea-Bissau for the peaceful resolution of the recent political crisis that has been rocking the county.

Buhari also applauded Olusegun Obasanjo for playing a laudable role in the resolution of the crisis.

Obasanjo, who went to Guinea-Bissau on August 21, was also adopted by ECOWAS as the regional body’s special envoy on the political dispute in the country.

Buhari thanked Chief Obasanjo and ECOWAS in a statement issued on Saturday, September 19, by Femi Adesina, the president’s special adviser on media and publicity.

“The President thanks Chief Obasanjo for a job well done and commends the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government for its steadfast commitment to peace, security and progress in Guinea-Bissau and the entire West African region.

“President Buhari welcomes President Jose Mario Vaz’s acceptance of the solution to the recent political crisis proffered by Chief Obasanjo and congratulates Mr. Carlos Correia on his emergence as the new Prime Minister of Guinea-Bissau.

“He urges President Vaz and Prime Minister Correia to work together harmoniously to move their country forward as envisaged by authors of the Guinea-Bissau constitution which splits the executive arm of government into the Presidency and the Premiership.

“President Buhari implores all stakeholders in the development and progress of Guinea-Bissau to desist from any further actions that can jeopardize the stability of the country and its democratic future,” the statement read.

Earlier this month, President Buhari held a secret meeting with Chief Obasanjo at the presidential villa in Abuja.

After the closed-door meeting the ex-president refused to speak with state house correspondents and did not give any details of his conversation with Buhari. However, there was speculation that his visit might have been connected with his mission to Guinea Bissau.
