The caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party at the House of Representatives on Thursday demanded the release of the Deputy National Chairman of the party, Mr. Uche Secondus.
The caucus claimed that the reason given by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for arresting Secondus was “flimsy” and did not connect the former PDP Acting National Chairman to a crime.
The Minority Leader of the House and leader of the caucus, Mr. Leo Ogor, who gave the position of the group at the National Assembly, said the members had yet to comprehend how a car gift by a private individual would be the reason for arresting a political party official.
Ogor noted that the arrest of Secondus had given credence to the view held by the PDP that the anti-corruption war of the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government was targeted at the opposition.
“I am calling on the EFCC to release him and apologise to him if they have nothing else against him”, he stated.
He noted that the same APC government that was “harassing” PDP officials had also received vehicle donations and funds for its campaigns for the 2015 general polls.
Ogor spoke more, “The recent arrest of our deputy national chairman has been of major concern to us. This points clearly to the unrelenting agenda to destroy the PDP and obliterate viable opposition by the ruling party.
“I think it is something that calls for concern and the time has come for every Nigerian to also start asking questions. What actually is going on? Is the EFCC actually playing somebody’s script? Or, it is a form of intimidation, trying to gag the opposition parties? The allegation against our deputy national chairman is that he was given vehicles by a private business man, either as political patronage or some level of contribution.
