Shiite members trek to Abuja, demand El-Zakzaky’s release

The President of Media Forum, Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Musa Ibrahim, has accused security operatives of planning to attack youths trekking from Zaria to Abuja to demand the release of the group’s leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.

El-Zakzaky has been in detention for the past eight months.

Ibrahim, in a statement on Saturday, alleged that the security operatives were planning to attack the youths, adding that some weapons would be claimed to have been found on them.

According to him, the security agents were planning to accuse the Islamic Movement of Nigeria of planning to launch an attack in the FCT in a bid to forcibly release Zakzaky.

Ibrahim stated that the IMN was not a violent group, adding that it was mischievous for violence to be ascribed to it now.

The statement read, “We will like to inform the general public that these young men and women that started their trek from Zaria, Kaduna State, are peaceful in all their actions.  Since last week, when they started, nobody has complained as they moved along the expressway to Abuja.

“They decided to trek on their own volition, just to show how aggrieved they are with the continued incarceration of Sheikh Zakzaky and to draw attention to the fact that he is being held without recourse to due process of the law. Nonetheless, we will keep calling on the Federal Government to, as a matter of priority, release our leader and all others detained with him.”
