Flood Kills 21, Render 5,300 Homeless in Kano

But authorities of the Kano State Emergency and Rehabilitation Agency (SERA) said only eight councils were on its list.

However, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said about 22 councils have been affected since the beginning of the rainy season.

SERA’s Executive Secretary Aliyu Bashir Nukkel, who spoke in his office yesterday, said: “Eight councils have so far been affected by flood this year – Bagwai, Shanono, Kiru, Bebeji, Dawakin Kudu, Garun Malam, Warawa, and Wudil.

“In Bagwai, we recorded 220 victims, Shanono had 58 victims, Garun Malam had 197, Kiru had 775, Bebeji 403 victims, Warawa had 84, Dawakin Kudu had 2,067. On the whole, we have about 5,300 victims.

“We have also recorded three deaths; two at Bebeji and one at Kiru. Five persons, who sustained injuries, have been treated and discharged.

“The houses that collapsed are 2,017 while 3,803 farmlands were washed away, with over N1.9 billion lost.

“We have sent the victims to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for help but I must tell you that of all these incidents, that of Warawa was more serious. The victims had to be accommodated by neighbours, friends and well wishers.

“Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has visited the area and released N2.9 million to assist victims.

Now, we are preparing a comprehensive report that will include the extent of damage; it will be ready soon and we will forward it to the government for action.”
