Sam Allardyce has hit out at the media following his sacking as England manager, stating that "entrapment has won".

The 61-year-old's reign in charge of the Three Lions ended on Tuesday, lasting just 67 days, after The Daily Telegraph published a video in which Allardyce tells two men purporting to be from a Far East firm that he could offer advice on how to "get round" FA regulations concerning the transfer of players under third-party ownership.

Allardyce admitted he had made a mistake the morning after losing his role, but also expressed regret about the tactics used by the investigative reporters.

Speaking outside his home, Allardyce said: "On reflection it was a silly thing to do but I helped out someone I have known for 30 years.

"It was an error in judgement and I paid the consequences.

"Entrapment has won on this occasion and I have to accept that."

Allardyce says he left the Football Association on good terms and wished success to Gareth Southgate, who will take charge of the first team on an interim basis.

"The agreement was done very amicably with The FA and I apologise to those and all concerned in the unfortunate position I've put myself in," he said.

"I have a confidentiality agreement and I can't answer any more questions. I am going to go and reflect on it.

"I would like to wish Gareth and all of the England lads the best."

The former Sunderland boss was then asked if it will be his last game in football, to which he replied: "Who knows. We'll wait and see."
