The President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government, might suffer serious setback in coming weeks, as the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has threatened to embark on a one week warning strike, over failure by the Government to implement the 2009 Agreement, and 2013 Memorandum of Understanding, MoU.
It could be recalled, that after several months of disagreements and strikes, the Federal Government had in 2009, agreed to meet the demands of the Union, which includes restructuring of Lecturers salary scale, Staff loans, pension, overtime, and moderation of examinations.
Part of the Agreement includes funding of universities, where both parties agreed that each Federal Universities should get at least N1.5 trillion, between 2009 and 2011, while State Universities, within the same period, should receive N3.6 million.
Other Agreements include, that the 2004 Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Act, and the National University Commission, NUC, Act 2004, should be amended.
The consensus was reached after two years of negotiation between the Lecturers, and a Government Team, appointed by the then Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili.
Post-Nigeria, gathered that despite the agreement reached, the Federal Government since 2009, has not kept to its promise.
ASUU National President, Biodun Ogunyemi, had severally decried that despite efforts to see to their demands, most especially in this change government, all hopes have so far been dashed to the ground, as it seems the Federal Government under Buhari, had also turned a deaf ear.
