The save heaven for pirates in the Nigeria’s entertainment industry would soon be over as President Muhammadu Buhari gave a marching order to security agencies to clampdown on pirates.
Buhari stated that artistes who have laboured so hard to churn out films and other intellectual property need be protected so that they can enjoy the fruits of their labour.
The president gave this order after receiving a briefing from the permanent secretary of the ministry of information, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan and her directors on Tuesday July 14 in Abuja.
The special senior adviser on media and publicity to the president, Femi Adesina, in statement released to newsmen said: “Nollywood is making progress. We should work with them. Unless they are backed, they will be ruined by pirates who want to reap where they have not sowed.
“They have built an industry with their own sweat. It is therefore incumbent on us to give them the necessary support.”
Buhari urged law enforcement agencies to identify the perpetrators of copyright piracy, their sponsors and collaborators, and bring them to justice.
The president asked the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) to make use of their wide reach to shore up their revenue profiles.
A veteran Nollywood actress, Shan George, earlier threatened few days ago that she will fight pirates with all her might even if it means that she will use local charm (juju) in fighting the menace to standstill.
