Delta State Govt Dismisses WAEC Debt Claims

The Delta state government has said it does not belong to the states that are owing the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in the conduct of the 2014/2015 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The examination board recently said that 19 states in the country owed it a cumulative debt of N4bn.
Though the exam body did not name the states, there were speculations that the Delta state government did not meet up with its financial obligation of paying for its candidates in the examination.
Mr. Chiedu Ebie, the state Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, yesterday insisted that the state was not indebted to WAEC and that the government met all its obligations to the examination body with the payment of WASSCE fees in January 2015.
According to him, the state paid N269,440,650.00 for the 23,397 candidates which the state sponsored for the 2014/2015 examination.
He further stressed that the present administration would not take steps that would jeopardize the future of school children in the state.
In a related development WAEC has announced that it will release results of candidates whose states are owing the exam council.
