Ahead of the 2016 governorship election in Edo state, the Labour Party (LP) has come up with nine-man working committee to help re-organise the party in preparation for the poll.
Those appointed to be among the nine people to be saddled with the responsibilities in the committee are Sam Omokaro as chairman, Johnson Idahor, deputy chairman, Edo South; Idemudia Agbonaye, deputy chairman, Edo Central; and K. M. E. Mohammed, deputy chairman, Edo North, the National Mirror reports.
Other members of the committee are Akhere Fredrick, secretary; Uwangue Fred, treasurer; Sam Atoe, Youth Leader; Aina Adedeji, Woman Leader; and Maltilda Oviawe as Deputy Woman Leader.
According to the LP South- South national vice-chairman during the inauguration of the committee, Comrade Bobo Atari Adou said that the creation of the committee by the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) became necessary following the expiration of the tenure of the state working committee.
Following the setting up of the committee with a 90-day deadline to round off its assignment on the Edo guber poll, Adou stated that the appointment of the committee was in line with the party’s desire for congresses to be held to elect new officers for a fresh tenure, adding that hence, all activities of the LP shall rest squarely on the committee’s shoulders.
The committee chairman, Omokaro, responded and said that the agenda of the committee included bringing back old members of the party and recruiting new members.
He said that the committee would also source for a credible gubernatorial candidate for the 2016 election in state adding that they will organise congresses at the local and state government levels in line with the directive from the party’s national body.
Meanwhile, the former 2011 governorship candidate of the party in Oyo state, Dr Azeez Adeduntan, has recently described the political party as a union of hungry politicians who are looking for daily bread to survive.
