Andy Murray has finally ended a two-year, eight-match losing streak to world No. 1 Novak Djokovic after winning the 2015 Rogers Cup in Montreal.
Murray won the match 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to claim his 35th career title giving his chances at the U.S. Open in a few weeks a huge boost.
Murray’s title is his third in Canada and first victory over the world No. 1 since beating him in the 2013 Wimbledon final.
Speaking after the match, Murray was appreciative of his opponents abilities whill adding his admiration for Djokovic’s ability to speak so many languages after the defeated reigning Australian Open and Wimbledon champion talked to the Montreal crowd in French during his runner-up speech.
Meanwhile in the women’s final placed in Toronto, Belinda Bencic defeated Simona Halep, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 3-0, as the Romanian was forced to retire with a left leg injury after losing the first three games of the final set.
Bencic’s followed her semi-final upset of top-ranked Serena Williams on Saturday night.
This is the Swiss teenager’s second career title which is sure to propel her to rank No. 12 when the new WTA rankings come out.
