NDLEA Raises Alarm Over Escaped Suspect

A suspected drug baron in Anambra state, Uche Baron, has escaped from the custody of the Anambra state command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The state commander of the agency, Sule Momodu, said Baron is the highest distributor of cannabis sativa or Indian hemp in the state and its environs; adding that he operates a warehouse at the Onitsha market, where he syndicated cannabis.
He revealed that the suspect escaped arrest on Thursday, August 20, 2015 when anti-narcotics officials raided the market. Baron was said to have fled on sighting the officials. He has since been declared wanted.
An alleged agent of the suspect, Ugochukwu Chukwu, was however arrested in the raid. Momodu further revealed that 109.8 kg of cannabis were recovered from Chukwu, who is reportedly a brother-in-law to Baron.
According to Momodu,  Chukwu would soon be arraigned, while he also used the opportunity to task judges in the state to assist the agency in the war against drug offenders, Daily Times reports.
“Our cases are well prepared, and they are water-tight. We look forward to getting justice. We want a situation where drug offenders will get jail terms from 15 to 25 years or life imprisonment.”
“Those in the Onitsha main market know him. We don’t want to invade the market for obvious reasons; but we have the resources and the power to do that,” Momodu said.
Last week, NDLEA arrested a 29 year old fashion designer for excreting 44 wraps of substances that tested positive for cocaine, weighing 850 grammes.
Meanwhile, the NDLEA in Edo state has arrested about 108 persons over alleged Indian hemp cultivation and trafficking.
