The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has impounded 453 vehicles following a special operation by the Corps, in order to curb the menace of continuous trailer accidents in Lagos state.
Corps Marshal of FRSC, Boboye Oyeyemi
On Thursday, July 30, 2015, the FRSC Corp Marshal, Mr. Boboye Oyeyemi gave the figure after inspecting the arrest of trailer drivers in the state.
Mr. Oyeyemi further added that, about 209 drivers were charged to court in the last one week since the Corps embarked on “Operation Scorpion” in order to curb the menace of trailers on the road.
He disclosed that, they have engaged all stakeholders in order to ensure proper safety on the roads.
Oyeyemi said, “We have engaged all the stakeholders to ensure that there is safety on our roads. It is not meant to be a punitive measure but a reminder that trailer owners and drivers should take the precautionary measures to ensure that they prevent accidents. They must ensure that the trailers are secured properly from the Ports and drivers must have valid driver’s license and have road worthy vehicles. We have arrested 453 drivers and prosecuted 209 of them.  The arrest is not aimed at collecting fines but to serve as a warning to others to take all precautionary measures. This exercise will be sustained and we believe that with the support of the stakeholders, there will be drastic reduction of accidents caused by stakvehicles”.
Reacting to the arrest of trailer drivers, the president Association of Maritime Truck Owners (MTO), Chief Remi Ogungbemi urged government to fix bad roads across the country.
Ogungbemi disclosed that, “We support FRSC in sanitizing the road users but we are appealing to government to   rehabilitate the bad roads across the country. The blame for accidents on our roads should not be placed entirely at the door step of truck drivers and truck owners. Bad roads also contribute to accidents and put our drivers ‘and other road users lives in danger
