Senate To FG: Fix The Bad Roads Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Senate has urged the federal government to commence immediate rehabilitation of all roads across the country.
The decision was reached after the senate adopted a motion moved by Senator Dino Melaye representing Kogi West Senatorial District, on the floor of the upper chamber today regarding the collapse of a number of road infrastructures in the country.
The senate also directed its adhoc committee on works to embark on audit of all road projects in Nigeria with the view to producing raw data for further necessary legislative action.
It also urged the ministry of works to seek additional means to fund the rehabilitation of roads across the country.
Melaye opined that several trillions of naira has been spent on road construction and rehabilitation in Nigeria since democracy returned to the country.
“It’s also observed that the collapse of the road infrastructure has virtually cut off many parts of Nigeria, with its attendant negative impact on trade and commerce. It also observes that the collapse has led to a decline in agricultural activities,” he said.
He pointed out with sadness that concomitant loss of lives as a result of the bad state of roads. Meanwhile, the Senate also rejected the calls for toll gates on roads. The toll gates across the country were dismantled by the administration of former president Olusegun Obasanjo.
The Senate also summoned the Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Godwin Emefiele to brief them on the depreciation of the naira in Nigeria.
