A fifty-five year old woman, Florence Aladenoye died after she was bitten by a dog in Idanre, in the Idanre local government area of Ondo state.
Aladenoye was said to have been attacked by the dog of her neighbor, Olafingbesote Afolabi, after which she was rushed to the hospital where she later died, Nigerian Tribune reports.
A source said: “The dog ran after the woman and bit her for no obvious reason and it took the intervention of neighbours around before the woman could be liberated from the grip of the dog.”
According to the source, after she was rescued from the dog, they rushed her to a nearby hospital and she was referred to the state Specialist Hospital in Akure, where she was subsequently transferred to Federal Medical Centre in Owo but all efforts to save her life proved futile.
Family of the deceased, who were displeased with the attitude of the dog owner towards the incident, reported the matter at the police station in Idanre.
Afolabi was later arrested by policemen of the Ondo state police command for failing to take any action after his dog inflicted several injuries on the victim which led to her death.
During interrogation, the dog owner said the dog was his but he had not immunized it against rabies.
Confirming the incident, the state police public relations officer, Wole Ogodo, said the victim was taken to about five different hospitals before she died in FMC, Owo.
“The dog owner did not show any concern over the incident until the woman gave up the ghost last week,” Ogodo said.
The police spokesman said the corpse had been deposited at a morgue, while investigation was ongoing, adding that Afolabi was being detained at state Criminal Investigative Department (CID) office in Akure.
He therefore, called on residents of the state who had dogs and other domestic animals to ensure that their animals are properly kept and immunised.
