Gays landed Catholic bishop Vitus Huonder (left) in trouble after he quoted Biblical passage calling homosexuality “abomination”
Vitus Huonder, the Catholic bishop of church located in eastern Switzerland, faces three years in prison for calling homosexuality a deadly sin and abomination in his preaching.
In his speech, delivered on July 31 to the cheering Catholic crowd, Vitus Huonder cited a Biblical passage from the book of Leviticus: “If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.
Bishop Huonder explained to his listeners that this quotation “alone suffice to clarify unambiguously the church’s position on homosexuality.
A Swiss gay right group “Pink Cross” filed a criminal complaint against bishop Huonder for “inciting people to crime or violence” using the Bible quotes. Huonder faces up to three years behind bars if found guilty.
Recent opinion poll has shown that Nigerians have become more gay than they used to be five years ago – or at least more gay-friendly. The newest opinion poll shows shift in attitude towards gay people and same sex marriages.
According to that poll, in general only one in six people knows someone who is homosexual, but among youth in their teens and twenties every third person knows someone who is openly gay.
