The Nigerian Football Federation has laid down the rules for any Nigerian who intends to become the next president of FIFA.
Two Nigerians, former Abia State Governor, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu first made his ambition known before former footballer Segun Odegbami made his intentions to run for the FIFA president post known.
The NFF has however resolved to tell how this two persons can gain the recognition of the NFF.
In an emergency meeting of the executive committee of NFF held at the hotel presidential, Port-Harcourt on Monday, 7th September, 2015, the NFF revealed that anyone can declare his intentions to become the next FIFA president but will have to make proper consultations to avoid embarrassments on the international stage.
The NFF recalled how two Nigerian football administrators lost elections to be on the FIFA/CAF Executive Committees due to lack of extensive consultations.
In a statement signed by the Chairman of Media and Publicity of the NFF, Hon. Suleiman Yahaya-Kwande and published on the official website of the governing football body, it was revealed aspirants will have to produce some documents to avoid embarrassments.
The Statement reads in part: “Following a thorough appraisal of the recently pronounced aspiration of a few prominent Nigerians for the Office of Presidency of world football –governing body, FIFA, the Executive Committee decided thus:
“The aspiration of these eminent Nigerians is in tandem with the conviction of the present NFF Executive Committee that our country can no longer be a silent member of the international football community. In truth, there is nothing wrong with any qualified Nigerian aspiring to rule the world in any given sector.
“However, the Executive Committee noted with deep concern that over the past four (4) years, two prominent Nigerian football administrators had lost elections to be on the FIFA/CAF Executive Committees. The Committee believes these losses can be put down to lack of extensive consultations.”
The statement further reads: “Against the foregoing, the Executive Committee is determined that Nigeria will no longer be exposed to such defeats in international football politics, as they inevitably reduce our stock.
The NFF said candidates will have to produce the following documents to be given proper endorsements:
1. Letter of endorsement from the relevant State Football Association.
2. Provision of evidence of fulfillment of the FIFA Presidential election eligibility provisions.
3. Endorsement by continental football governing body, CAF (the NFF can facilitate meetings with CAF top hierarchy).
4. Letter of support from the National Sports Commission.
The NFF also revealed that if all documents are produced and all processes properly taken, the FIFA Presidential candidates will be endorsed.
Odegbami and Orji Kalu’s ambitions have been ridiculed by three Nigerians working with FIFA and CAF; Chief Amanze Uchegbulam, Paul Bassey and Sani Toro calling on the two candidiates to “stop embarrassing Nigeria’’ as they chase the FIFA presidency.
