These are indeed bad times for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo state. About 3,400 members of the party in the oil rich Ilaje local government area of the state have dumped the party for the rival All Progressives Congress (APC).
The PDP defectors include former political office holders led by Prince Glory Okuntade, Timi Olowofoyeku, Dele Asogbon, Ademibo Okuntade, Festus Ademuwagun, Chief Ebini Idowu and Oronla Adebanjo.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Glory Okuntade said they were leaving the PDP because of the situation the leaders of the party had plunged the country into in the last 16 years, Nigerian Tribune reports.
According to Okuntade, they have been liberated from the political wilderness as there was nothing to show their supporters in the coastal community despite being the only oil producing community in the state.
On hand to receive the defectors, Chief Olusola Oke, the PDP governorship candidate in the last election in the state and now a leader of the APC, said the time has come for all Ilaje sons and daughters to dump the PDP which he said had brought untold hardship to the people of the country.
“I am ashamed of being a member of a party that has plunged the country into calamity. With the revelation coming out now, I have to apologise to my supporters and Nigerians that my former party brought Nigeria to its knees,” he said.
The defection of members of the PDP to the APC comes just a week afterthousands of aggrieved members of the party dumped the party for the All Progressives Grand Alliance in Anambra state.
