Plans by the Senate President, Bukola Sraki to reduce the salaries and allowances of senators has apparently hit a brick wall.
The Senate in Wednesday, August 11 suspended consideration of the report of its Finance committee, which was set up to review of the finance of the Senate for the purposes of cutting cost of governance through downward review of salaries and allowances of senators.
The committee, which had on Thursday, August 6, submitted the report during plenary, recommended that 30 percent be slashed from the lawmakers pay.
But there was a sharp disagreement between the lawmakers as some resolved to reject the reduction of salaries and allowances as recommended by the committee.
Some Nigerians are not happy over this as they have criticized the rejection of a pay cut by members of the Senate and their six weeks recess.
In June, the news that each senator receives N506,600 per annum as wardrobe allowance shocked Nigerians and quickly sparked reactions.
In response to the massive outcry against their huge salaries and entitlements, the upper chamber of the National Assembly had in June, inaugurated a committee that would review the salaries of lawmakers.
