Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state, has carved a niche for himself with the way he bows to popular men of God to seek their blessings.
Recently, he was seen kneeling before a Pastor Lazarus Mouka, the general overseer of the Lord’s Chosen Church, in Port Harcourt, the state capital, and Nigerians were of varying opinions about his act.
The Punch made a compilation of the governor’s photos, stating that there is barely any Sunday that the Ikwerre-born politician is not seen among congregations of different Christian denominations.
The report has it that in the build up t0 the March and April 2015 general elections, the governor’s level of appearances in churches was not as high as it is now.
But in the last one month, he has been to many churches seeking and getting prayers for himself and the success of his administration, with his visit to the Royal House of Grace International Church, where another guest of the church and a renowned cleric, Dr. Uma Ukpai, prayed for him and described him as an asset to the state, the most recent of the lot.
Wike’s reason for visiting the Lord’s Chosen Church was that he wanted to redeem his pledge of a reconstruction of a major road leading to the church, a promise he made during his visit prior to the general election.
Clerics from the Methodist Church and Archibishop Ignatius Kattey of the Anglican Church at the Government House in Port Harcourt had also visited the governor, and it was reported that none of them left without praying for him and the success of his administration.
It will not be a thing of surprise, therefore, if the governor is seen in a another church next Sunday, as he seems to need more of the prayers to survive the election tribunal case to remain in office as the number one citizen of Rivers state.
The request put forward to the Rivers state governorship election petitions tribunal by the All Progressives Congress and its governorship candidate, Dakuku Peterside, to transfer all the materials that were used for the conduct of the April 11 governorship election in the state to Abuja for inspection was recently declined by the court.
