Princess Elizabeth II became Britain’s Queen in Africa in 1952. Her reign lasts longer than the existence of Nigeria as an independent state. See her photos year by year.
Queen Elizabeth II became monarch before Nigeria gained independence. And she is the longest-reigning Britain’s monarch and the second longest reigning monarch in the world after King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand who ascended his throne on 9 June 1946.
Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne on 6 February 1952 and reigned for 63 years and seven months – calculated at 23,226 days.
The record-breaking 89-year-old monarch said the title was “not one to which I have ever aspired“.
“Inevitably a long life can pass by many milestones – my own is no exception – but I thank you all and the many others at home and overseas for your touching messages of great kindness,” – Queen told.
Queen Elizabeth II is also now the longest reigning female monarch in world history.
Besides that, Queen Elizabeth II also holds the record for the most countries with her portrait on the coinage, because she is the head of state of 16 Commonwealth states.
Some countries, such as Fiji, still use currency featuring Elizabeth II, despite she is no longer queen there.
Queen Elizabeth II also holds the record of the longest royal marriage. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have been married for almost 68 years.
They have four children, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Last week a slice of their wedding cake was sold at an auction for 500 pounds.
Queen Elizabeth II’s family are in dire straits and in need of financial help with reports showing up saying that the royal family has only a million pounds left in reserves.
