Mourinho right to let Giggs go - Sir Alex Ferguson

Former Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson insists Jose Mourinho was right to let Ryan Giggs leave.

Sir Alex Ferguson does not begrudge Jose Mourinho allowing Ryan Giggs to leave Manchester United and insisted is right to bring in his own staff.

Giggs departed Old Trafford after 29 years on Saturday after rejecting the opportunity of a diminished coaching role.

The Welshman, who served as assistant to Louis van Gaal, wants to become a manager in his own right and is currently away with ITV as a European Championship pundit.

Talking to the BBC, Ferguson said he felt the decision for Giggs to cut ties was smart.

‘It is time Ryan stood on his own feet, got out there and accepted the challenge,’ Ferguson said.

‘I think he is ready to manage and he has a lot of quality. He doesn't want to spoil that quality by going to a club where it is sacking a manager every two minutes.’

Giggs has been linked to jobs at Bolton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest over the course of this close season, both of which were filled.

The 42-year-old is on the hunt for his first step on the managerial ladder and the parting of the ways on Mourinho’s arrival appeared to suit both parties.

Mourinho has brought in trusty No 2 Rui Faria as he attempts to revamp United after a dismal three seasons following Ferguson’s retirement.

He is busy in the transfer market, having signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Eric Bailly, also expecting to land Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Borussia Dortmund in the coming days. He hopes to persuaded Paul Pogba into joining as well.

Ferguson added United can hold no qualms at Mourinho appointing those close to him for a job he has openly courted for years.
‘You have got to have, in your assistant, someone you have trusted all your life,’ he said.

‘When I came to United, I brought Archie Knox because he was a valuable person for me. I trusted him 100 per cent. Jose Mourinho has had his assistant for years and, quite rightly, has stuck by his own man.

‘If Jose hadn't had an assistant, I know he would have taken Ryan.’

Giggs penned an open letter to supporters at the weekend, saying: ‘It has not been a decision that I have made lightly. I'll take away so many special memories as well as a lifetime of experiences that will, I hope, serve me well in the future.
