Court Imprisons Civil Servant After Granting Him Divorce

A 53-year-old civil servant identified as Ebenezer Bankole Agbetuyi, has gotten himself in trouble minutes after a customary court in Ado Ekiti, dissolved his 11-year-old marriage.

According to Punch, Agbetuyi, had dragged his wife, Bukola Agbetuyi, to court seeking dissolution of the marriage and custody of their two children, Yetunde, 10 and a year-old baby over her frequent fighting, keeping late nights outside, lack of care for him and showing no respect for his family.
Joseph Ogunsemi, the court president, dissolved the marriage following his complaint and granted custody of the children to Bukola in view of their tenderness and that the evidence proved that the respondent had been taking good care of the children.
Agbetuyi was ordered by the court to be paying Bukola a monthly maintenance of N4,000 on each of the children through the court with effect from September 2015 and that he would be responsible for their education.
The court also ordered that Agbetuyi, would have access to the children but he must give a prior notice before doing so.
Agbetuyi who tried in vain to speak openly in court, after the judgment barged into the office of the registrar to protest the custody of his daughter, but was unsuccessful.
He was later heard shouting outside the court that he would not pay the N4,000 ordered for the upkeep of the children.
His behaviour angered the court president who ordered the police officer attached to the court to bring back the petitioner who was already causing a scene outside the court premises.
The court president, ordered the detention of Agbetuyi for “exhibiting indiscipline, ignorance and disturbing the peace of the court” after the judgment and most especially when another matter was going on.
He was consequently taken to Okesa Police Station and charged with contempt of court.
