A report by Leadership indicates that governors under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party are mounting pressure on Jubril Isa, one of the party’s aspirants in the Kogi state primary, to step down for the incumbent governor, Idris Wada.
Ahead of the primaries, there are rumours that the governor do not have adequate support from the party delegates to defeat Isa, who is popularly called Ochocho in the state.
The primary election which was earlier scheduled to hold on Thursday, September 10, was postponed to Monday, September 14, 2015, in what the National Working Committee of the party says is due to some logistic issues pertaining to the exercise.
Isa, a thorough grassroots politician in the state had won the PDP primaries in 2011 but lost the ticket to Wada after pressure from the national leadership of the party then.
The PDP governors reportedly met at the government lodge of the Ondo state government, where they concluded on how to prevail on Isa to sacrifice his ambition for Wada. and not contest the primaries scheduled for next Monday.
The governors are said to be concerned about the possibility of their colleague being embarrassed at the primary election even as it is not clear what their plans for compensating Isa is as they are no more the ruling party.
A source who was at the meeting said: “As it stands now, I cannot say there is pressure yet on anybody to step down and that cannot be ruled out yet. The party will always look for the easiest way to win the election. The party will look for an easy way to prevail on the toughest opponent to step down in the interest of the party.”
Another source, who is a member of the party’s NWC confirmed that the meeting of the governors was held, adding that it was informed by their worries over Wada’s political dilemma.
The NWC member said: “The party leadership is in dilemma over the situation. I can tell you that if the primaries hold today the governor stands a risk of being defeated. So his colleagues are trying to save him from such disgrace by asking the strongest opponent to step down for him.”
